When I first biked up to the big mural at Cesar Chavez park at 5 Points, I was confused a bit. The mural is dedicated to Cesar Chavez, but there are images of Gandhi and Tolstoy. I quickly learned that Gandhi was a big influence on Chavez and, in turn, Tolstoy was a huge influence on Gandhi. But there was another person that Leo Tolstoy influenced a great deal: Martin Luther King. Tolstoy's book, "The Kingdom of God is Within You," established many of the principles of non-violent resistance. So next time you are at brunch at the 5 Points Market, stroll over to the park and visit the man who influenced some of the greatest civil rights leaders in history.
